As I wrote the last time, everything in me wanted to invite my mom to hear my testimony. But I didn’t. I finally got the nerve 4 days later to call her and tell her about my call into ministry. Why did it take so long? This is about 5 months now after the initial calling from God. Well, when I was in business I was ALL IN. This was a dream career and I LOVED it! I was doing good things for people, changing lives for the better and even ministering for Christ in the workplace. I was already in the career for almost a decade by this point and I didn’t want to do anything else. I even told my clients that I would be with them throughout their lives and into their retirement. I believed that with everything in me. Then God called me into ministry.
It was a Sunday afternoon. We had just finished a water baptism service at the lake. It was a beautiful, bright sunny hot day in Minnesota. I was in the car on my way home and I called my mom. “Hey mom, this is hard for me to tell you…” Lots of umms and uhhhs and pauses. Then I told her about how God called me into ministry and it has been confirmed. “Well that’s ironic” she said. No pause or anything. Just those words. I remember them clearly. I think I pulled over at this point not knowing where this conversation was headed. “What do you mean?” I asked.
She continued to tell me that when she was pregnant with me, she asked God to give her a baby girl. If he did, she would give the child over to him for ministry. I am the youngest of 5. I have 4 older brothers. I am a girl.
“Mom, I am 32 years old. Why haven’t you ever told me this before?” I asked.
“Well, I was scared you would become a missionary to Africa.” She answered. Legit response. I am sure I was shaking at this point. I mean, that’s quite the news to receive on the phone!
She had more to say.
She said that when she was pregnant and at church one Sunday, a lady told her she would have a girl. She didn’t think much of it since people predict what you will have all of the time. She then told me that when she was in the hospital in labor, Jesus visited her and told her she was going to have a girl. WHAT? JESUS VISITED YOU IN THE HOSPITAL? HOW DO YOU NOT TELL PEOPLE THIS INFORMATION! Like, how do you keep quiet about this? Well, needless to say I had her support. She even offered to help me with my classes.
I couldn’t help but call Pastor Bill and tell him this new information I had received. He told me about Hannah and Samuel (1 Samuel 1:9-20). At this time I wasn’t extremely well versed in the Bible. I knew the basics and the Sunday School stories. I had a real, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I was devouring the Bible daily. In the New Testament. But this was the OT. I didn’t venture there much. I read the story and wept. God is so amazing.
